Why do I get an error saying DOI already exists?

When you upload a record to Zenodo and provide an existing DOI you may experience an error which says that the "DOI already exists". This is because a record with the same DOI already exists in Zenodo, and we perform a duplicate detection to prevent the same record to be uploaded twice.

You can find the record with the existing DOI using one of two methods:

  • Method 1: Go to the link "https://zenodo.org/doi/<DOI>" replace "<DOI>" with DOI you are trying to upload.
  • Method 2: Search for doi:"<doi>" replacing <doi> with the existing DOI (note that the DOI must be with the quotes as in the example).
